An appealing biopic headlined by a milestone performance!!!
Sam Bahadur works due to a multitude of reasons:
- The narration flows quite seamlessly across the timelines and keeps you hooked in. A key thing it scores in, is with respect to the fact that it remains filmy (without going overboard with any melodrama) and never slips into a documentary narrative style.
- As with some of the recent series and movies depicting true events, the original footages add a lot more authenticity to the proceedings.
- The supporting cast is top notch be it Sanya Malhotra as the wife, Fatima Sana Shaik as Indira Gandhi or Mohammed Zeeshan Ayub as General Yahya. The army officer cast are also a perfect choice.
But the main factor that the movie turns out to be special is all courtesy a stupendous performance from Vicky Kaushal. The body language, the mannerisms, the dialogue delivery etc all combine to give us a terrific performance to savor forever. It is a treat to watch him transition across the timelines and yet maintain the aura and class around the character he was portraying.
Meghana Gulzar might not have given us a historic movie by any chance for all her focus was around the character rather than the details around the historic events he was part of. But she does give us a brilliantly made biopic that is quite engaging to watch and boasts of a top-class lead performance.
