In New South Wales after the 2019-20 bushfires, brush-tailed rock-wallabies made it through the flames, then faced a slower danger: the burned slopes no longer had enough food. Helicopters carried carrots and sweet potatoes into rocky habitat so colonies could hold on while the landscape recovered.
The detail feels almost storybook, but the logic is practical. In a fire season, survival doesn’t end when the smoke clears. For wildlife, the second crisis can be hunger, exposure, and a landscape that no longer behaves like home.
A food drop from the sky looks strange until the ground has nothing left to give.
