This Day, That Year โ€” August 11, 2012

On this day in 2012, Mumbai witnessed one of its worst law-and-order breakdowns as violence erupted at Azad Maidan.

What began as a protest over events in Assam and Myanmar soon turned into a violent mob attack, leaving multiple dead and over 50 people injured, including 44 police personnel.

Rioters attacked policemen, assaulted women police personnel, targeted journalists, torched media vehicles, vandalised public property and even desecrated the Amar Jawan Jyoti memorial.
