Uttarakhand has created history by becoming the first Indian state to abolish its Madarsa Board, marking a major milestone toward inclusive and modern education. With Governor Lt. Gen. Gurmeet Singh (Retd.) approving the Uttarakhand Minority Education Bill 2025, all minority-run institutions — including madarsas — will now be brought under the Uttarakhand Board of School Education.
This landmark decision aims to provide every student, regardless of background, access to quality education rooted in both traditional and modern learning. For the first time, students studying in madarsas will now learn mathematics, science, computer education, and English alongside religious stu****s — bridging the long-standing gap between faith-based and mainstream education.
The reform also establishes the Uttarakhand State Minority Education Authority, which will monitor and regulate all minority institutions under the National Education Policy (NEP 202 and National Curriculum Framework (NCF). The goal is to ensure uniform standards, transparency, and accountability across the education system.
While some critics express concern over the loss of institutional autonomy, supporters hail it as a transformative step toward equality, empowerment, and national integration. Uttarakhand’s bold move could well serve as a blueprint for India’s educational future — one nation, one education.
