UPI Heads to Japan! 🇮🇳➡️🇯🇵
Indian travellers visiting Japan may soon enjoy the same smooth payment experience they’re used to at home. A pilot initiative is bringing India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) to Japan through a partnership between NPCI International and Japanese digital payments firm NTT Data.
Under this integration, UPI will connect with local merchant networks, allowing Indian tourists to scan QR codes and pay directly from their Indian bank accounts using familiar UPI apps—without carrying cash or relying on international cards.
The move is designed to simplify transactions for the rising number of Indian visitors to Japan, especially as travel rebounds and cashless convenience becomes more important. It also helps cut foreign exc****e hassles, ATM dependence, and card fees, making everyday spending, dining, and transport easier.
Since its launch in 2016, UPI has transformed digital payments in India, and its global expansion is gaining pace. After rollouts in places like Singapore, the UAE, and Bhutan, the Japan pilot could be another major step toward wider international adoption.
If the trial succeeds, Japan could soon become one of the most UPI-friendly destinations for Indian tourists—where a simple scan replaces bulky wallets and complex currency conversions.
