“Hardline voices should open their eyes and look closely. A Hindu leader has won from Dhaka. Gayeshwar Chandra Roy has secured victory, and Bangladesh is set to see BNP rule after 17 years.
The results of Bangladesh’s long-awaited general elections are now out. In this election, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party won 209 seats, while Jamaat-e-Islami captured 68 seats. Notably, senior BNP leader Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, who belongs to the minority Hindu community, won from a Dhaka constituency. According to Bangladeshi media reports, Roy secured 99,163 votes from the Dhaka-3 seat, defeating Jamaat-e-Islami candidate Mohammad Shahinur Islam.
This victory has drawn attention as it comes at a time when incidents of violence and harassment against minority communities have been reported across Bangladesh. In December 2025, following the killing of hardline youth leader Sharif Usman Hadi, several attacks were reported, some of them fatal. India has also expressed concern over the continued violence against Hindus in Bangladesh.
Meanwhile, the only Hindu candidate fielded by Jamaat-e-Islami faced defeat in the Khulna-1 constituency. In that contest, Krishna Nandi received 70,346 votes, while BNP candidate Amir Ejaz Khan won with 121,352 votes.
It is worth noting that the party winning the 13th parliamentary elections will replace the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus. After the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government in August 2024, the interim administration took charge in Dhaka, a period during which India–Bangladesh relations became strained. In these historic elections, BNP is heading towards a decisive victory and is set to return to power after a gap of 17 years.
