Mumbai’s suburban rail network saw a surge in penalties from ticketless travel, with Central and Western Railways together recovering Rs 262 crore. Around Rs 7 crore was collected from AC local passengers alone over the past year.
Central Railway recorded 16.16 lakh irregular travel cases in 2025–26, recovering Rs 71.31 crore in penalties. Western Railway detected 30 lakh violations between April 2025 and February 2026, collecting over Rs 191 crore, a 42 per cent rise year-on-year.
