Chetna and I had the pleasure of visiting the school of Shri Narinder Pal Singh Narang, an industrialist and member of the Himachal Olympic Association, who kindly facilitated our visit to Shri Paonta Sahib Gurudwara on 24th February, 2026.
In addition to his business ventures, he is doing commendable work in education through three schools ‘THE SCHOLARS HOME’ in Paonta Sahib with around 1,500 students. He and his wife graciously hosted us for lunch at the school and presented us with traditional Himachali gifts.
We also visited the statue of Hari Singh Nalwa in the school compound, inaugurated by Lt General KJS Dhillon (Tiny Dhillon) on 1st October 2025.
Hari Singh Nalwa, a celebrated general under Maharaja Ranjit Singh, played a key role in securing the north-western frontiers of the Sikh Empire and served as Governor of Peshawar. Known for his bravery and leadership, his reputation inspired widespread fear across the frontier.
Popular folklore suggests that some Afghan tribesmen even disguised themselves in women’s attire, wearing salwar and burqa, to avoid being identified as fighters when his forces were nearby. While largely part of oral tradition, it reflects the deep impact he left on the region.
