More than four decades later, the 1980 Mr. Olympia remains one of bodybuilding's most controversial contests. Former Mr. Olympia Samir Bannout recently revisited the debate, sharing his belief that Arnold Schwarzenegger's famous comeback victory was not the best physique on stage that day.
Bannout recalled watching Arnold train in the weeks leading up to the contest and being impressed by how quickly the seven-time champion regained his size. However, he felt the version that appeared on Olympia weekend was not the same athlete he had seen in the gym a month earlier. According to Bannout, injuries and peaking issues may have prevented Arnold from reaching his absolute best condition.
Despite his admiration for Schwarzenegger, Bannout maintains that the result remains questionable. In his view, Arnold's legendary status and immense popularity may have influenced perceptions of the contest, making the 1980 Olympia one of the most debated decisions in bodybuilding history.
