Sarwan Singh delivered one of India’s proudest athletics moments in 1954, winning gold in the 110m hurdles at the Asian Games with a brilliant 14.7-second run.

A decorated athlete and former Army serviceman, his journey after sport tells a far more difficult story. With little support after retirement, he struggled to make ends meet and was eventually forced to drive a taxi in Ambala. In a heartbreaking turn, he even had to sell his gold medal for survival.
