Amid the debate over the imposition of charges on Unified Payments Interface (UPI) transactions, former BharatPe co-founder Ashneer Grover has strongly criticized the government's decision. He said that any such fee would be tantamount to tax. The government has issued a notification stating that no charges will be levied on UPI payments up to Rs 2,000. However, the government did not clarify whether the fee will apply to transactions above Rs 2,000 and whether merchants will have to pay it. This is the issue that has now sparked a debate.
