THE SIKH SCIENTIST WHO FOUND A HIDDEN LAYER IN THE HUMAN EYE 👁️
For more than a century, scientists believed the human cornea had five layers.
Then, in 2013, Prof. Harminder Singh Dua and his team at the University of Nottingham identified a previously unrecognised sixth layer — just 15 microns thick.
It became known as “Dua’s Layer.”
Their discovery helped scientists better understand the structure of the cornea and conditions such as keratoconus, while also having implications for corneal surgery and transplantation.
The layer was identified through laboratory research involving donated human corneas, including techniques using tiny air bubbles and electron microscopy.
From Punjab to Nottingham, Prof. Harminder Singh Dua’s name became part of medical science itself.
He was later appointed a CBE in 2019 for services to ophthalmology.
