कम लोगों को ही पता होगा कि पढ़ाई के दौरान पंकज बचपन में आर एस एस के सदस्य भी बन गये थे और वो उसकी विभिन्न शाखाओं में नियमित रूप से सक्रिय भी रहे इस दौरान वो आर एस एस की सांस्कृतिक गतिविधियों में बढ़ चढ़कर हिस्सा लेते रहे। साथ ही खेती के काम में भी वो अपने पिता का हाथ बँटाते रहे। प्राथमिक शिक्षा पूरी हो जाने के बाद, पंकज के पिता ने काॅलेज की पढ़ाई पूरी करने के लिए उन्हें पटना भेज दिया जहाँ पंकज ने पटना कॉलेज से हिंदी से स्नातक की डिग्री ली।
