1956 ई. में 19 रियासतों का एकीकरण होने के बाद राजस्थान राज्य बना। इन 19 रियासतों में 16 रियासतें राजपूतों की, 2 जाटों की और एक मुस्लिम रियासत थी।
गुहिल वंशी राजपूतों की 5 रियासतें मेवाड़, डूंगरपुर, बांसवाड़ा, प्रतापगढ़ व शाहपुरा थीं। राठौड़ राजपूतों की 3 रियासतें मारवाड़, बीकानेर व किशनगढ़ थीं। चौहान राजपूतों की 3 रियासतों में कोटा और बूंदी हाड़ा चौहानों की रियासतें थीं और सिरोही देवड़ा चौहानों की रियासत थी।
यदुवंशी जादोन राजपूतों की रियासत करौली व यदुवंशी भाटी राजपूतों की रियासत जैसलमेर थी।
कछवाहा राजपूतों की रियासत जयपुर व अलवर थी। झाला राजपूतों की रियासत झालावाड़ थी।
जाटों की 2 रियासत भरतपुर व धौलपुर थी और एकमात्र मुस्लिम रियासत टोंक थी। हालांकि टोंक पर लंबे समय तक राजपूतों का राज रहा, लेकिन फिर पिंडारियों की लूटमार को देखते हुए अंग्रेजों ने अमीर खां पिंडारी को टोंक रियासत का मालिक बना दिया।
19 रियासतों के अलावा राजपूतों के 3 ठिकाने लावा, कुशलगढ़ और नीमराना भी एकीकरण में शामिल हुए।

कहां राजा भोज- कहां गंगू तेली
यह कहावत क्यों बनी ?
बचपन से लेकर आज तक हजारों बार इस कहावत को सुना था कि "कहां राजा भोज- कहां गंगू तेली" आमतौर पर यह ही पढ़ाया और बताया जाता था कि इस कहावत का अर्थ अमीर और गरीब के बीच तुलना करने के लिए है,
पर भोपाल जाकर पता चला कि कहावत का दूर-दूर तक अमीरी- गरीबी से कोई संबंध नहीं है। और ना ही कोई गंगू तेली से से संबंध है, आज तक तो सोचते थे कि किसी गंगू नाम के तेली की तुलना राजा भोज से की जा रही है यह तो सिरे ही गलत है, बल्कि गंगू तेली नामक शख्स तो खुद राजा थे।
जब इस बात का पता चला तो आश्चर्य की सीमा न रही साथ ही यह भी समझ आया यदि घुमक्कड़ी ध्यान से करो तो आपके ज्ञान में सिर्फ वृद्धि ही नहीं होती बल्कि आपको ऐसी बातें पता चलती है जिस तरफ किसी ने ध्यान ही नहीं दिया होता और यह सोचकर हंसी भी आती है यह कहावत हम सब उनके लिए सबक है जो आज तक इसका इस्तेमाल अमीरी गरीबी की तुलना के लिए करते आए हैं
इस कहावत का संबंध मध्य प्रदेश की राजधानी भोपाल और उसके जिला धार से है, भोपाल का पुराना नाम भोजपाल हुआ करता था।
भोजपाल
नाम धार के राजा भोजपाल से मिला।
समय के साथ इस नाम में से "ज" शब्द गायब हो गया और नाम भोपाल बन गया।
अब बात करते हैं कहावत की कहते हैं, कलचुरी के राजा गांगेय ( अर्थात गंगू ) और चालूका के राजा तेलंग ( अर्थात तेली) ने एक बार राजा भोज के राज्य पर हमला कर दिया इस लड़ाई में राजा भोज ने इन दोनों राजाओं को हरा दिया
उसी के बाद व्यंग्य के तौर पर यह कहावत प्रसिद्ध हुई "कहां राजा भोज-कहां गंगू तेली" राजा भोज की विशाल प्रतिमा भोपाल के वीआईपी रोड के पास झील में लगी हुई है।
