एक भक्त इमली के वृक्ष के नीचे बैठकर भगवान् का भजन कर रहा था। एक दिन वहाँ नारद जी महाराज आ गये। उस भक्त ने नारद जी से कहा कि आप इतनी कृपा करें कि जब भगवान के पास जाये तब उनसे पूछ लें कि वे मुझे कब मिलेंगे ?
नारद जी भगवान के पास गये और पूछा कि अमुक स्थान पर एक भक्त इमली के वृक्ष के नीचे बैठा है और भजन कर रहा है, उसको आप कब मिलेंगे ? भगवान ने कहा कि उस वृक्ष के जितने पत्ते हैं, उतने जन्मों के बाद मिलूँगा।
ऐसा सुनकर नारद जी उदास हो गये। वे उस भक्त के पास गये, पर उससे कुछ कहा नहीं।
भक्त ने प्रार्थना की कि भगवान ने क्या कहा है, कह तो दो। नारद जी बोले कि तुम सुनोगे तो हताश हो जाओगे। जब भक्त ने बहुत आग्रह किया, तब नारद जी बोले कि इस वृक्ष के जितने पत्ते हैं, उतने जन्मों के बाद भगवान की प्राप्ति होगी।
भक्त ने उत्सुकता से पूछा कि क्या भगवान ने खुद ऐसा कहा है ? नारद जी ने कहा कि हाँ, खुद भगवान ने कहा है। यह सुनकर वह भक्त खुशी से नाचने लगा कि भगवान् मेरे को मिलेगे, मिलेंगे, मिलेंगे ! क्योंकि भगवान के वचन झूठे नहीं हो सकते।
इतने में ही भगवान् वहाँ प्रकट हो गये ! नारद जी ने देखा तो उनको बड़ा आश्चर्य हुआ। वे भगवान से बोले कि महाराज ! अगर यही बात थी तो मेरी फजीहत क्यों करायी ?
आपको जल्दी मिलना था तो मिल जाते। मेरे से तो कहा कि इतने जन्मों के बाद मिलूँगा और आप अभी आ गये ! भगवान ने कहा कि नारद ! जब तुमने इसके विषय में पूछा था, तब यह जिस चाल से भजन कर रहा था, उस चाल से तो इसको उतने ही जन्म लगते।
परन्तु अब तो इसकी चाल ही बदल गयी ! यह तो ‘भगवान् मेरे को मिलेंगे’‒इतनी बात पर ही मस्ती से नाचने लग गया ! इसलिये मुझे अभी ही आना पड़ा।
कारण कि उद्देश्य की सिद्धि में जो अटल विश्वास, अनन्यता, दृढ़ता, उत्साह होता है, उससे भजन तेज हो जाता है।
