पन्नालाल पटेल (1912–1989) गुजराती साहित्य के सबसे प्रमुख और सम्मानित कथाकारों में से एक थे। ग्रामीण जीवन के सजीव चित्रण के लिए विख्यात, वे उमाशंकर जोशी के बाद ज्ञानपीठ पुरस्कार पाने वाले दूसरे गुजराती लेखक थे।

उनकी पहली कहानी 'शेठनी शारदा' 1936 में प्रकाशित हुई, और उनका पहला उपन्यास 'वलमणा' (Vlamna) 1940 में आया।

सत्य पथ के बलिदानी महाशय राजपाल
पूरे संसार को अपने झंडे तले लाने के इच्छुक कट्टरपंथी प्रायः अन्य धर्मावलंबियों की भावनाओं का अनादर कर अपनी संकीर्णता का परिचय देते रहते हैं। 1920 में लाहौर में कुछ मुसलमानों ने दो पुस्तकें प्रकाशित कीं। ‘कृष्ण तेरी गीता जलानी पड़ेगी’ में श्रीकृष्ण को चरित्रहीन बताते हुए उन पर भद्दी टिप्पणियां की गयीं थीं। इसी प्रकार ‘बीसवीं सदी का महर्षि’ में आर्य समाज के संस्थापक ऋषि दयानंद पर तीखे कटाक्ष किये गये थे।
आर्य विद्वान पंडित चमूपति जी को लगा कि यदि इनका उत्तर नहीं दिया, तो जहां एक ओर कट्टरपंथियों का साहस बढ़ेगा, वहीं दूसरी ओर हिन्दुओं का मनोबल भी गिरेगा। उन्होंने भी ‘रंगीला रसूल’ नामक एक पुस्तक लिखी। इसे प्रकाशित करना आसान नहीं था; पर ‘आर्य पुस्तकालय’ के महाशय राजपाल ने लेखक के नाम बिना उसे छाप दिया। उन्होंने लेखक को यह आश्वासन भी दिया कि चाहे कैसा भी संकट आये; पर वे उनका नाम प्रकट नहीं करेंगे। पुस्तक के छपते ही मुसलमानों में हलचल मच गयी। वे प्रकाशक को धमकियां देने लगे। उर्दू के समाचार पत्रों में ऐसे धमकी भरे लेख छपने लगे; पर महाशय जी ने सारी जिम्मेदारी स्वयं लेते हुए लेखक का नाम नहीं बताया।
एक दिन महाशय जी अपने प्रकाशन में बैठे थे कि खुदाबख्श नामक पठान वहां आया। उसने महाशय जी पर छुरे से प्रहार शुरू कर दिये। अचानक स्वामी स्वतंत्रानंद जी वहां आ पहुंचे। उन्होंने खुदाबख्श को दबोच कर पुलिस के हवाले कर दिया। महाशय जी को अस्पताल पहुंचाया गया। जहां से ठीक होकर वे फिर अपने काम में लग गये। खुदाबख्श को सात साल की सजा हुई।
कुछ दिन बाद एक अन्य उन्मादी ने प्रकाशन में बैठे स्वामी सत्यानंद जी को महाशय जी समझ कर उनकी हत्या का प्रयास किया; उसे भी लोगों ने पकड़कर पुलिस को सौंप दिया। लाहौर के मुसलमान किसी भी तरह महाशय राजपाल जी को मारना चाहते थे। उन पर इस पुस्तक के लिए लाहौर उच्च न्यायालय में मुकदमा भी चलाया गया; पर पुस्तक पूरी तरह मुस्लिम इतिहास ग्रंथों पर ही आधारित थी। अतः न्यायालय ने महाशय जी को बरी कर दिया। इसके बाद पुनः उनकी हत्या का षड्यन्त्र बुना जाने लगा।
6 अप्रैल, 1929 को महाशय जी अपने प्रकाशन में बैठे थे कि इलमदीन नामक एक उन्मादी ने हमला कर महाशय जी की हत्या कर डाली। भागते हुए हत्यारे को विद्यारत्न नामक युवक ने पीछा कर पकड़ लिया और पुलिस को सौंप दिया। महाशय जी की हत्या का समाचार आग की तरह फैल गया। उनकी शवयात्रा में हजारों हिन्दू शामिल हुए।
उनके बच्चे बहुत छोटे थे। अतः डी.ए.वी. संस्थाओं के संचालक महात्मा हंसराज जी ने मुखाग्नि दी। स्वामी स्वतंत्रानंद जी ने अंतिम प्रार्थना कराई। महाशय जी की धर्मपत्नी सरस्वती जी ने कहा कि अपने पति के मारे जाने का मुझे बहुत दुख है; पर यह गर्व भी है कि उन्होंने धर्म और सत्य के लिए बलिदान दिया।
विभाजन के बाद महाशय जी के परिजन दिल्ली आकर प्रकाशन के काम में ही लग गये। जून 1998 में दिल्ली के विश्व पुस्तक मेले में गृहमंत्री श्री लालकृष्ण आडवाणी ने पहले ‘फ्रीडम टु पब्लिश’ पुरस्कार से स्वर्गीय राजपाल जी को सम्मानित किया। पुरस्कार उनके पुत्र विश्वनाथ जी ने ग्रहण किया।
