जावेद ने जैसे ही अपनी बीवी रह चुकी शबनम को होटल में देखा, उसकी आंखें चौड़ी हो गईं। वह चौंक गया, यह वही औरत थी जो कभी उसकी जिंदगी का अहम हिस्सा हुआ करती थी। होटल में बाकी लोग अपने खाने में व्यस्त थे, लेकिन जावेद की निगाहें अब शबनम पर टिकी थीं। तलाक के बाद वे दोनों भले ही कानूनी रूप से अजनबी हो गए थे, लेकिन पांच सालों का रिश्ता, एक ही छत के नीचे बिताए गए दिन और एक ही बिस्तर पर सोई हुई रातें इतनी जल्दी भुला देना आसान नहीं होता।

शबनम अकेले ही अपनी टेबल पर खाना खा रही थी, जबकि जावेद भी दूसरी टेबल पर बैठा था। अचानक शबनम को कुछ याद आया, उसने चम्मच रखी और उठकर जावेद की ओर बढ़ी। उसने बिना किसी हिचकिचाहट के पूछा, "आपने खाने से पहले इंसुलिन का इंजेक्शन लिया है?"
