हल्दीघाटी के युद्ध में बिना किसी सैनिक के राणा अपने पराक्रमी चेतक पर सवार हो कर पहाड़ की ओर चल पडे‌. उनके पीछे दो मुग़ल सैनिक लगे हुए थे, परन्तु चेतक ने अपना पराक्रम दिखाते हुए रास्ते में एक पहाड़ी बहते हुए नाले को लाँघ कर प्रताप को बचाया जिसे मुग़ल सैनिक पार नहीं कर सके. चेतक द्वारा लगायी गयी यह छलांग इतिहास में अमर हो गयी इस छलांग को विश्व इतिहास में नायब माना जाता है.
चेतक ने नाला तो लाँघ लिया, पर अब उसकी गति धीरे-धीरे कम होती जा रही थी पीछे से मुग़लों के घोड़ों की टापें भी सुनाई पड़ रही थी उसी समय प्रताप को अपनी मातृभाषा में आवाज़ सुनाई पड़ी, ‘नीला घोड़ा रा असवार’ प्रताप ने पीछे पलटकर देखा तो उन्हें एक ही अश्वारोही दिखाई पड़ा और वह था, उनका सगा भाई शक्तिसिंह. प्रताप के साथ व्यक्तिगत मतभेद ने उसे देशद्रोही बनाकर अकबर का सेवक बना दिया था और युद्धस्थल पर वह मुग़ल पक्ष की तरफ़ से लड़ता था. जब उसने नीले घोड़े को बिना किसी सेवक के पहाड़ की तरफ़ जाते हुए देखा तो वह भी चुपचाप उसके पीछे चल पड़ा, परन्तु केवल दोनों मुग़लों को यमलोक पहुँचाने के लिए. जीवन में पहली बार दोनों भाई प्रेम के साथ गले मिले थे.
इस बीच चेतक इमली के एक पेड़ तले गिर पड़ा, यहीं से शक्तिसिंह ने प्रताप को अपने घोड़े पर भेजा और वे खुद चेतक के पास रुके. चेतक लंगड़ा (खोड़ा) हो गया, इसीलिए पेड़ का नाम भी खोड़ी इमली हो गया. कहते हैं, इमली के पेड़ का यह ठूंठ आज भी हल्दीघाटी में उपस्थित है.
चेतक का पराक्रम
महाराणा प्रताप के इतिहास के अनुसार, माना जाता है कि महाराणा प्रताप का भाला 81 किलो वजन का था और उनके छाती का कवच 72 किलो का था. उनके कवच, भाला, ढाल और दो तलवारों का वजन मिलाकर कुल वजन 208 किलो था. महाराणा प्रताप का वजन 110 किलो और लम्बाई 7 फीट 5 इंच थी.
चेतक के पराक्रम का पता इस बात से चलता था कि हल्दीघाटी का युद्ध शुरू हुआ तो चेतक ने अकबर के सेनापति मानसिंह के हाथी के सिर पर पांव रख दिए और प्रताप ने भाले से मानसिंह पर सीधा वार किया. चेतक के मुंह के आगे हाथी कि सूंड लगाई जाती थी.
