For the nation, he was wounded and disabled, but he never refused to fight. He chose sport to represent his country and went on to make history by winning India’s first Paralympic gold medal.
Murlikant Rajaram Petkar was a sol****r in the Indian Army when the 1965 war c****ed his life forever. An aerial attack left him with nine bullet wounds and a spinal injury that made him paraplegic. He even remained in a coma for nearly two years.
But Mr Petkar refused to let his injury decide what came next.
Doctors suggested swimming to help him regain strength. He took it seriously. He learned to swim in less than a month and became a master within a few months.
The man who had once competed in boxing for the Indian Army soon found a new arena.
At the 1972 Paralympics in Heidelberg, Mr Petkar won gold in the 50 metre freestyle and set a world record of 37.33 seconds. He became India’s first Paralympic gold medallist.
What makes his story even more remarkable is his journey across sports. He competed in boxing, table tennis, javelin, shot put, discus, archery and slalom, often with little support or infrastructure.
For decades, his historic achievement remained largely unnoticed. His son later created a website highlighting his journey, which helped bring his story to wider attention.
Mr Petkar was honoured with the Padma Shri in 2018 and received the Arjuna Award (Lifetime) in 2025, 53 years after his historic gold.
In his words, as reported, “Happiness was my best friend. I chose to lead a happy life.” A line that still speaks to anyone facing challenges and choosing to keep moving forward.

झांसी।राष्ट्रीय खेल दिवस के अवसर पर आज मेजर ध्यानचंद के जन्मदिवस पर आयोजित फुटबॉल प्रतियोगिता के उद्घाटन समारोह में शामिल होने के साथ ही मन में हॉकी के जादूगर की स्मृतियों से जुड़े कुछ अनछुए पहलुओं को शब्द देने की इच्छा हुई। इसी सिलसिले में हॉकी के महानायक मेजर ध्यानचंद के ओलंपियन एवं विश्व विजेता स्वर्ण पदक से सुशोभित पुत्र अशोक कुमार से बातचीत करने के लिए उनके ऐतिहासिक हीरोज क्लब मैदान पहुंचा।
इसी दौरान अनायास ही मन में दद्दा की प्रतिमा को कैमरे में कैद करने की जिज्ञासा हुई। कैमरा क्लिक हुआ तो सामने आया दृश्य केवल एक तस्वीर नहीं, बल्कि हॉकी के स्वर्णिम इतिहास की जीवंत कहानी बन गया।

26 अगस्त 2007 को भारतीय हॉकी ने अपने एक महान सितारे जमन लाल शर्मा को खो दिया था। आज उनकी पुण्यतिथि पर भारतीय हॉकी जगत उन्हें श्रद्धा और सम्मान के साथ याद कर रहा है। जमन लाल शर्मा उन खिलाड़ियों में शामिल रहे, जिन्होंने भारतीय हॉकी के गौरवशाली दौर को अपनी प्रतिभा, अनुशासन और समर्पण से मजबूत किया।
