1 जुलाई 1913 को उत्तराखंड के देहरादून के निकट डोईवाला में एक भारतीय गोरखा-नेवार परिवार में दुर्गा मल्ला का जन्म हुआ। उनके पिता गंगा राम मल्ला सेना से जुड़े हुए थे और परिवार में अनुशासन, साहस तथा देशभक्ति का वातावरण था। बचपन से ही दुर्गा मल्ला ने अपने समाज की वीर परंपराओं को देखा और सुना। गोरखा समुदाय सदियों से अपनी बहादुरी के लिए विश्वभर में प्रसिद्ध रहा है, लेकिन दुर्गा मल्ला केवल सैनिक बनकर संतुष्ट नहीं होना चाहते थे। उनके भीतर देश को आज़ाद देखने का सपना पल रहा था। उस समय भारत अंग्रेजों की गुलामी में जकड़ा हुआ था और हर ओर आज़ादी की लहर उठ रही थी। यही माहौल उनके व्यक्तित्व को आकार देने लगा।
