विरुंगा राष्ट्रीय उद्यान ने 2007 में अभूतपूर्व नरसंहार के बाद अपना सबसे अँधेरा पल जिया। प्रमुख वन रक्षक पॉलिन न्गोबोबो ने पहाड़ी गोरिलाओं की रक्षा करने के लिए सशस्त्र विद्रोहियों का सामना किया, लेकिन दुर्भाग्य से वह उन सभी को बचा नहीं सके। प्रतीकात्मक चाँदी-पीठ वाले सेनकेक्वे और कई मादाओं को उन सैनिकों ने फाँसी दे दी, जो उन जानवरों के बसे हुए जंगल को काटकर कोयले की फैक्ट्रियाँ बनाना चाहते थे, जिससे अनाथ हुई शावक अपनी मरी हुई माताओं से चिपकी रह गईं। "एक गोरिला को मारना हमारे लिए एक आपदा है", उन्हें बचाने की कोशिश करने के कारण यातनाएँ झेलने के बाद न्गोबोबो ने कहा। यह वैश्विक जैव विविधता के लिए एक विनाशकारी चोट थी।

आषाढ़ शुक्ल पक्ष की देवशयनी एकादशी भगवान श्रीहरि विष्णु की आराधना का अत्यंत पावन दिन है। इस तिथि से चातुर्मास का आरंभ माना जाता है।
देवशयनी एकादशी के संबंध में मान्यता है कि इस तिथि से चार माह के लिए भगवान विष्णु क्षीरसागर में शयन करने चले जाते हैं और फिर देवउठनी एकादशी पर जागते हैं।
भक्तों के लिए यह चार माह साधना, जप, तप, दान और सात्त्विक जीवन का विशेष समय होता है। इन चार माह में मांगलिक व शुभ कार्य वर्जित रहते हैं।
