हम अक्सर ऑफिस जाने के लिए ट्रैफिक या मौसम की शिकायत करते हैं। लेकिन तमिलनाडु के नीलगिरि में डी. सिवन (Postman D. Sivan) ने जो किया, उसे सुनकर आप दंग रह जाएंगे।
सिवन ने 30 सालों तक एक ही काम किया— रोज 15 किलोमीटर पैदल चलना। वो भी किसी सड़क पर नहीं, बल्कि नीलगिरि के घने जंगलों, फिसलन भरी पगडंडियों और अंधेरी गुफाओं के बीच से। उनका काम था सुदूर आदिवासियों और गांव वालों तक उनकी चिट्ठियाँ और पेंशन पहुँचाना।
रास्ता इतना खतरनाक था कि कई बार उनका सामना जंगली हाथियों, भालुओं और सांपों से हुआ। कई बार उन्हें जान बचाने के लिए पेड़ों पर चढ़ना पड़ा। लेकिन मजाल है कि कभी उनकी डाक लेट हुई हो!
65 साल की उम्र में वो रिटायर हुए, लेकिन उनकी कहानी आज भी गूंजती है। सिवन साहब ने साबित कर दिया कि इंटरनेट के जमाने में भी 'खाकी वर्दी' वाला जज्बा कभी पुराना नहीं होता।
