On 17 February 1670, the forces of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj recaptured the strategically vital Sinhagad Fort from the Mughal Empire in one of the most daring military operations in Maratha history.
The night assault was led by the fearless Maratha warrior Tanaji Malusare, who scaled the steep cliffs of the fort near present-day Pune with a small contingent of sol****rs.
According to historical accounts, the Marathas used rope ladders and surprise tactics to breach the fort’s defenses, which were then under the control of Mughal commander Udaybhan Rathod.
Though Tanaji Malusare lost his life in the fierce battle, the Marathas ultimately secured victory. Deeply moved by the loss of his close companion, Shivaji Maharaj is believed to have said, “Gad aala, pan Sinha gela” (The fort is won, but the lion is lost). In honour of Tanaji’s bravery, Kondhana Fort was renamed Sinhagad, meaning “Fort of the Lion.”
The recapture of Sinhagad marked a turning point in Shivaji Maharaj’s resurgence against Mughal authority and remains a symbol of courage, sacrifice and strategic brilliance in Indian history.
