पीड़ित युवती उस क्षेत्र में किराए के मकान में रहकर पढ़ाई कर रही है। सोशल मीडिया पर किए जा रहे दावों और हिंदू संगठनों के अनुसार, जब युवती के भाई ने मदरसे के पास वाहन खड़ा करने की कोशिश की तो वहां मौजूद कुछ युवकों ने उसे 'काफिर' कहकर संबोधित किया। आरोपियों ने कहा कि यहां केवल मुस्लिमों को वाहन खड़ा करने की अनुमति है और दूसरों को इसके लिए 1000 रुपये देने होंगे। जब छात्र ने पैसे देने से मना किया, तो उस पर जानलेवा हमला कर दिया गया।
