कलियुग की शुरुआत में, द्वारकाधीश श्रीकृष्ण ने अपने परम सखा उद्धव के सामने एक गुप्त इच्छा प्रकट की थी। उन्होंने कहा था कि इस नए युग में, वे केवल भव्य अनुष्ठानों से नहीं, बल्कि प्रेम और मधुर भजनों के माध्यम से भक्तों के हृदय में निवास करेंगे। प्रभु की इसी इच्छा को साकार करने के लिए धरती पर महाकवि जयदेव का आगमन हुआ। उन्होंने अपनी अटूट श्रद्धा और काव्य-कुशलता को मिलाकर 'गीत-गोविन्द' जैसे अलौकिक ग्रंथ की रचना की। इस काव्य में उन्होंने पद्म पुराण के सार को समेटते हुए, वृंदावन के कुंजों में राधा-कृष्ण की रासलीला और गोकुल के नटखट कान्हा की बाल-क्रीड़ाओं को शब्दों में पिरोया। जयदेव के शब्द इतने मधुर थे मानो सोने में अमूल्य हीरा जड़ दिया गया हो। यह अद्भुत रचना देखते ही देखते जन-जन के कंठ का हार बन गई और इसकी कीर्ति चारों दिशाओं में फैल गई।
